RONGAI ROUTE

RONGAI ROUTE

The Rongai Route is the only path up the north-eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro and is considered the second easiest after the Marangu Route. It is gaining popularity due to its stunning and unique wilderness scenery, offering several days of hiking through true wilderness before joining the Marangu Route at Kibo Camp. Along the way, trekkers can experience overnight stays in caves, providing a completely unique adventure. This route is ideal for those wishing to avoid the crowds found on the Marangu Route. Suitable for hikers seeking a quieter trail, the Rongai Route typically takes 6 to 7 days, allowing for gradual acclimatization. It passes through remote forests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, giving trekkers opportunities to encounter wildlife such as colobus monkeys and rare birds.

One of the highlights of the Rongai Route is the climb through Mawenzi Tarn, a dramatic alpine lake beneath the jagged Mawenzi Peak. Trekkers then merge with the Marangu Route for the final summit push to Uhuru Peak via Kibo Hut. While slightly less scenic than the Machame Route, Rongai offers a drier and more sheltered trek, making it especially favorable during the rainy season. The route is ideal for climbers seeking a quieter, off-the-beaten-path adventure with high summit success rates. It is suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers, particularly those who prefer a gradual ascent and the unique northern landscapes of Kilimanjaro. Choosing the Rongai Route provides an opportunity to experience the mountain’s beauty from a different perspective. It is an excellent choice for those looking to reach the Roof of Africa via one of Kilimanjaro’s most underrated trails.
