MARANGU ROUTE
Marangu Route
The Marangu Route, often called the Tourist Route or the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest, shortest, and least difficult path to Uhuru Peak. It is the most popular route, with approximately 70% of climbers choosing it, as it primarily consists of easier hiking. Despite its reputation as the easiest route, Marangu has a surprisingly high failure rate due to trekkers underestimating the physical demands and neglecting proper preparation. With adequate training and proper acclimatization, however, it can provide a comfortable and successful climb. One of the main advantages of the Marangu Route is its unique accommodation. Unlike other routes that require camping, it features permanent mountain huts at each overnight stop. These huts offer shelter during the rainy season and foster a communal, social atmosphere among climbers, enhancing the overall trekking experience.
While it may not be as visually striking or diverse as routes like Machame or Lemosho, the Marangu Route still offers beautiful views, particularly in the moorlands and alpine desert zones. It is the only route that uses the same trail for both ascent and descent, which reduces the variety of scenery but simplifies logistics. Trekkers can choose between a five-day or six-day itinerary, with the six-day option strongly recommended to improve acclimatization and increase the chances of a successful summit. The Marangu Route is ideal for those who prefer a less rugged trek with more structure and shelter, making it especially suitable during the wetter months.
